Safe Patient Handling Needs
Q: Why PATRAN slide sheet?
A: PATRAN slide sheets are inexpensive to buy, so they immediately start saving health care organizations money by reducing workers’ compensation claims. PATRAN doesn’t have to be laundered so there’s no need to budget and buy enough sheets to allow for loss or breakdown in the laundry.
PATRAN slide sheets are lightweight and portable, so they can easily be carried in a pocket, put in a convenient spot in a patient’s room or placed in a PATRAN brand wall dispenser.
PATRAN slide sheets prevent-cross infection because they are single-patient-use and/or disposable devices. Use them multiple times with the same patient during his or her stay, then dispose of the PATRAN.
PATRAN slide sheets are very versatile. In addition to well-known uses for slide sheets, such as boosting and transferring patients, PATRAN slide sheets are used for tasks such as helping patients out of vehicles, rehabilitation exercises and dressing patients.
Q: Is PATRAN slide sheet a new product?
A: No. Jamar Health Products, Inc., has produced and sold PATRANs – primarily in the Midwest – since 1982. We invented this technology, offer the widest selection of single-patient-use slide sheets and related slide products and have the expertise that lends itself to the a number of different uses within a health care setting. Our slogan is “Slide to Safety.”
Q: Why use PATRAN single-patient-use slide sheets rather than a multiple-patient-use product?
A: Cost: For cost information, go to the Economics page of this website.
Convenience: Having the cost-efficient and convenient PATRAN slide sheets readily available means they will be used more often increasing employee safety.
Infection control: Health care facilities have policies requiring multiple-patient-use products be cleaned after each use. Those slides may not be completely clean and cause a contamination risk. In addition, they might go missing in the laundry or be ruined by improper laundering procedures. A used multi-patient-use slide sheet may look just like a clean one, which contributes to mistakes.
Q: Where should a PATRAN slide sheet be used?
A: Hospitals, nursing homes, specialty surgical centers, ambulance and air transport companies, health care education centers and nursing organizations.
Q: Does a facility need products in addition to PATRAN slide sheets to move patients?
A: PATRAN slide sheets are a good start. However, most health care providers should have some lifts, slings and other devices. Several large, well-equipped hospitals report that PATRAN slide sheets are their caregivers’ preferred and most-used safe patient handling devices, but they can’t be used to lift patients.
Components and Characteristics
Q: What’s the difference between a PATRAN slide sheet and a garbage bag?
A: PATRAN slide sheets do look similar to garbage bags, but the two products are very different. PATRANs are made from Jamar Health Products’ special polymers. PATRANs are much slipperier and have better anti-static properties than garbage bags. In short, PATRANs perform much better than garbage bags for safe patient handling tasks including moving, rehabilitating and dressing patients.
Q: Is the PATRAN slide sheet latex-free?
A: Yes. PATRAN slide sheets don’t contain latex.
Q: Can PATRAN slide sheets be recycled?
A: Generally yes, as long as the PATRAN slide sheets haven’t been used in isolation or soiled with body fluids and waste. The issue is sorting, whether PATRANs are sorted from other recyclables by the facility or the recycler. Talk to your facility’s recycler.
Q: Is the PATRAN slide sheet biodegradable?
A: No. Biodegradable products are not recyclable. If you don’t want it in the ground, why would you want it in such little pieces that you can never recover it? Also there are questions to whether items truly biodegrade in today’s landfills.
Q: Why doesn’t a PATRAN slide sheet have arrows on it?
A: PATRAN slide sheets are slippery in all directions, making them nondirectional, so they don’t need arrows like some other products.
Q: Why doesn’t a PATRAN slide sheet have directions on it?
A: PATRAN slide sheets are very versatile with a growing number of uses. It would be impossible to fit all of those instructions on one slide sheet. Instead, we provide numerous written and audio instructions with full-color drawings and photographs under the “Instructions” tab of this website.
Q: Is the PATRAN slide sheet sterile?
A: No. PATRAN slide sheets are clean, but not sterile.
Q: What should be done if the PATRAN gets body fluids on it?
A: Dispose of the soiled PATRAN and use a new one. Small spots can be cleaned, but for the time involved in cleaning a large area its best to get a new one.
Q: Can a PATRAN slide sheet be used between patients?
A: No. Jamar Health Products, Inc. strongly recommends against using the same PATRAN slide sheet with more than one patient as that may spread infection.
Q: How many times can a PATRAN slide sheet be used with the same patient?
A: About 30 times.
Q: Is there a patient size limit when it comes to using PATRAN slide sheets?
A: There is no weight limit. Caregivers at one facility boosted a 900-pound patient. At other facilities, patients heavier than 700 pounds have been transferred with PATRAN slide sheets. However, caregivers had to use two PATRANs side by side to cover the distance. For very large patients, two PATRANs will likely be required for additional width and more than two caregivers will be needed to move the patient. A PATRAN is 36 inches wide and a PATRANbari is 45 inches wide.
When it comes to height, there is no limit. PATRAN slide sheets are six feet long. PATRANbari slide sheets have a few extra inches. Taller patients can be moved by having caregivers hold up and move a patient’s head or feet or by using additional PATRANs under the head or feet.
Q: How many caregivers does it take to reposition or transfer a patient?
A: A minimum of two people is recommended. If the patient is very heavy, more staff members are recommended. Consult safety staff for specifics in your organization.
Q: Can a patient be lifted with PATRAN slide sheets?
A: No. PATRAN slide sheets are designed to slide patients. We use the slogan “Slide to Safety.”
Q: Can I move patients with PATRAN slide sheets but without linen?
A: Yes, but it is more common to move patients using a combination of PATRAN slide sheets and linen.
Q: What if the patient cannot be log-rolled?
A: Insert the PATRAN under the patient by one of the three non log-roll methods listed under the product instructions portion of this website.
Q: Can a PATRAN slide sheet be left under the patient?
A: Yes, while the patient is attended and another move is planned soon, such as in the x-ray or the catherization departments or during transport. Don’t leave PATRAN slide sheets under patients when they’re in bed. PATRAN slide sheets don’t breathe and they are slippery, creating a fall hazard.
Q: Can PATRAN slide sheets be left under a patient during radiology/imaging procedures?
A: Yes. PATRAN slide sheets are radiolucent, so it can remain under the patient during x-ray, CT and MRI tests.
Q: Is training available?
A: Yes. Jamar Health Products offers training literature and videos. In-service training is also available. To inquire please reach out to us at: firstname.lastname@example.org.
Q: Are there specific marketing materials available?
A: Yes. For specific marketing materials please reach out to: email@example.com
Q: Who can buy PATRAN slide sheets?
A: Health care providers. Health care providers are most likely to train staff to use PATRAN slide sheets properly. We don’t sell slide products through retail channels.
Q: Can PATRAN slide sheets be purchased for home care?
A: Qualified professionals can buy PATRAN slide sheets and take them into homes. They will need to train the home caregiver. Without proper training, PATRANs can be hazardous.
Q. How are PATRAN slide products packaged?
A: PATRAN slide sheets come individually folded in boxes of 25.
The PATRANsolo and PATRANapp products come individually folded and packaged in boxes of 25.
PATRANxs comes individually folded in boxes of 50.
PATRANbari comes individually folded in boxes of 20.
Q: What’s the shipping lead time for PATRAN slide sheets?
A: Most orders received before noon are shipped the same day. Shipments go FedEx unless another method is requested.
Q: How do we order the PATRAN?
